Laser Tattoo Removal After Care

The purpose of removing a tattoo is to create a renewed area of clear and healthy skin, that shows little to no evidence of the tattoo's existence. If you do not allow the healing process to complete properly, the tattoo removal can leave skin looking more damaged and unattractive than it did with the tattoo. Thus it is vital to complete the entire process of laser tattoo removal after-care.

Tattoo removal can have many after effects, some of which can be more painful than others. In the case of laser tattoo removal it is common for the site of removal to appear similar to a first-degree burn wound. This will appear as a blister, crust, or scab that may have pink or reddened skin surrounding the area, this does not mean the area is infected. However, to prevent it from becoming infected and to ensure that the healing process completes with minimal scarring or skin damage. To do this be sure to go through the following steps:

1. Clean the entire area where the tattoo was removed thoroughly and frequently but throughout the healing process make sure to keep the area dry. The most effective way to do this is to clean with antibacterial ointments or creams and apply a thin layer over the area. Creams that are made specifically for tattoo-removal aftercare are recommended but a standard burn-relief ointments will also work.

2. Do not under any circumstance pick at the area or attempt to remove the scab yourself, it will naturally separate over time if you let it. If blistering occurs, do not pop the blisters unless they become overly exasperated or filled with fluid. In this case, be sure to use sterile instruments and thoroughly clean the area in and around a broken blister.

3. Do not submerge or soak the area in water, especially hot water, for an extended period of time. Feel free to shower regularly but baths will only aggregate the area and slow the healing process.

4. Be sure to wear sun screen of at least SPF 30 over the area. Prolonged sun exposure will make a burned area more painful and sun burn obviously will cause further damage

5. Itching is a very common after effect of tattoo removal because the process dehydrates the skin which causes irritation. However, do not itch the area excessively or it may become infected. For itch relief, apply hydrocortisone cream or another skin-hydrating product.
